You are bombarded with the contrasting sounds of hushed conversation and boisterous boasting. The smell of food, drink, and firewood permeate the building. Two figures in particular catch your eye. Standing behind the bar, the innkeeper polishes the same glass over and over again, looking out over the crowd. In a far corner, a stranger wearing a dark cloak sits alone, nursing a drink. The other patrons give her a wide berth. $Orb hovers by your side, eagerly waiting to see what you will do next, and ready to offer assistance if needed.

The current situation has clearly been taking a toll on her. She looks up from her papers and addresses you.
“I don’t see a lot of new faces around here. Under normal circumstances I’d be happy to help you, but I’m dealing with a crisis at the moment.”

Careful to stay out of sight, you make your way slowly but steadily through the camp. Eventually you make it to the other side, and slip into the unoccupied cave entrance with the bandits none the wiser.

The bandits are unimpressed by your tough facade, forming a barrier as you approach and reacting aggressively.

You stride into the camp confidently, a menacing scowl on your face. A few bandits try to object, but an angry glare from you is enough to have them shrinking away from you. You walk unobstructed into the cave.
[[Enter the cave to the beast's lair]]<</if>>The overwhelming force of bandits is clearly displeased with you intruding on their perceived territory, and making ready for battle. Luckily, the bandit leader responds to your challenge of a duel. The battle is hard fought, but ultimately you come out on top, knocking him unconscious. The rest of the bandits stand aside, and allow you to pass into the cave.

Scraps of ruined sculpture litter the stone, and the walls are shored up with manmade pillars. At the end of the passage, a hole opens up into a vertical shaft. The only way forward appears to be down.

Erring on the side of caution, you decide to examine some of the man made structures in the cave before proceeding. A subtle breeze along the wall catches your attention, and examining more closely you find a crease in the stone. Digging your fingers in and pulling, the slab of stone swings open with minimal effort to reveal a hidden passage, with stairs leading down. You follow the stairs down, eventually exiting into a large open cavern.

You secure a rope on one of the pillars, and start to descend the shaft. Unfortunately, halfway down the shaft you lose your grip and begin to fall. You collide roughly with the hard stone floor of the cave… you’re going to feel that tomorrow, but at least you’re at the bottom. You find yourself in a large open cavern.<</if>>

You secure a rope on one of the pillars, and start to descend the shaft. It’s arduous work, but you are more than strong enough to make it down safely. Soon you find yourself in a large, open cavern.<</if>>

The creature looks like some strange fusion of lizard and bovine, with clawed forelegs, a toothy scaled head with brutal horns, and a furry set of haunches terminating in hoofed hind legs. The creature glows with a warm orange light, and cinders shake off of it as it moves.

Blade clashes against scale, and horn against armour as you face off against the fiery monster. With the help of some potions you purchased in town you manage to tip fate in your favour, coming out on top over the beast. The defeated beast succumbs to its wounds, its glow fading as it slumps onto the cold, stone floor. Finally, it’s light goes out.

With a flash of light, a portal opens next to the beast. You feel the flow of elemental energies pouring out of it.
[[The beast walks through the portal, returning home|Ending B]]<</if>>With the beast returned to its home, the people of the town and the surrounding farmers will now be completely safe. You collect up some treasures that were abandoned in the cave or perhaps gathered there by the beast before you make your way back to town.
The people are a little wary of the idea that the beast still lives, but for now they’re just satisfied that it won’t be stalking the countryside anymore. The innkeeper offers to put you up for a few days free of charge, while you decide what to do next.
[[Take a long rest|Final Orb Wisdom]]With the beast slain, you take the time to attend to your wounds in the cave before you limp back to town. You are hailed as a hero for stopping the beast’s reign of terror, though in the end you wonder if there could have been another way.
Still, you’re rewarded for your efforts. The town throws a celebratory feast in your honour, and you’re free to stay and recuperate as long as you need to.
